# 1. Introductory information
The materials here will replicate the main results of the paper "Too much of a good thing? Estimating the trade-off between voter turnout and the representativeness of election results when studying turnout shocks.", being Figure 2 and Tables 1 and 3. The enclosed files (almost all of which are Stata-files) will create the dataset used for the analysis and the main figures and tables of the paper. The code begins with files from input sources. That is, all steps of the process, including data cleaning, are performed in this replication.
Note that in the paper we also use data from a LISS panel survey called "Wiv Referendum 2018: Third measurement". This data is not included and is not required for running the do-file. The agency that ran this survey prefers it when researchers directly download this (opensource) data from their website: https://www.dataarchive.lissdata.nl/study-units/view/815 (doi: 10.17026/dans-xcr-n8az)

## 1.1 Title of the dataset

## 1.4 Dataset description
The dataset contains data on elections, municipal amalgamation, and demographic data on the level of Dutch municipalities around the year 2018. It includes:
- the data in .csv format and .dta;
- a readme file;
- a .do file to analyze the data.

## 1.5 Dates of data collection
The dataset is constructed in 2021. Note that the data itself relates to earlier years.

## 1.6 Geographic location of data collection
Groningen, the Netherlands

## 1.7 Keywords
Representation; voter turnout; exogenous shocks; referenda; instrumental variables

## 1.8 Language
English

## 1.9 Funding
- No special funding was received for creating this dataset.

# 2. Methodological information

## 2.1 Type and method of data collection
- The dataset was constructed by combining data from various publicly available data sources, such as Statistics Netherlands.

## 2.2 Envisioned uses of the dataset
- To further illustrate the method we introduce in the aforementioned article. As such, we point out some crucial steps for this in the Stata-code (see lines 148 and 163).
- Improve the replicability of the research.

## 2.3 Methods for processing data
The various sources files were first downloaded in .scv or excel formats and subsequently merged in Stata.

## 2.4 Instrument or software-specific information
- Stata (.do & .dta) and/or Excel (.csv)

# 3. Data specific information

## 3.1 File list
- This README file [.txt]
- data paper too much of.csv
- Data paper too much of.dta
- Stata code paper Too much of a good thing.do

## 3.2 Codebook
This dataset does not include a codebook. Rather, variables are labeled in the do-file using self explanatory labels.

## 3.3 Raw data sources
- Statistics Netherlands
- Kiesraad (Dutch Election Authorities)
- Spatial expertise center University of Groningen
